What is membrana tectoria?

The membrana tectoria is a thin, elastic membrane that runs along the inside of the spinal canal, connecting the axis (second cervical vertebra) and the occipital bone (base of the skull). It acts as a kind of sling and helps to support and stabilize the atlas (first cervical vertebra) and the axis as they rotate and twist. The membrana tectoria is made up of collagen fibers and is covered by a thin layer of ligamentous tissue. It is an essential part of the spinal column and helps to protect the spinal cord and nerves from injury or damage. Dysfunction of the membrana tectoria can lead to a number of spinal disorders and conditions, including spinal cord compression, herniated discs, and spinal stenosis.
